Monday Writing Prompt: An embarrassing moment

September 28, 2008 – 10:47 pm

Hello and welcome to Monday!

This week I am EXTRA excited to read your entries, since the topic is AN EMBARRASSING MOMENT.

ahem.  sounds like FUN, right?!

In other news, I start teaching at the UW this week and I am stressed and busy and running around like a chicken with my head cut off.  Therefore this may be the last writing prompt for a month or two.  Just thought I’d warn ya.

Here’s the code for the graphic:

And here’s my entry.  It’s a re-post… so apologies if you’ve already seen it.

–Jan 16, 2008–

Yesterday CJ and I were at the grocery store. He is seated in the cart facing me as I push him around the store and load up our cart.

Somewhere between the pasta and the canned goods he reaches out and grabs my left breast.

Ack!

I try to hide my dismay (it’s never good to let them know when they’ve ruffled you, lest they do it again and again and AGAIN). Calmly and quietly I say, “CJ, that is NOT OK.”

A very naughty smile spreads across his face.

“What’s in there mommy?” he asks me with feigned innocence.

I try to ignore him.

“What’s IN THERE?” he says, louder this time, and he points directly at my breast in case I’m confused about what he’s referring to.

Surreptitiously I scan the aisle. Several feet away is a 20-something man huddled over a can of soup. Can he really be that enthralled with soup selection, or is he pretending not to hear us?

“WHAT’S IN THERE MOMMY?!” CJ shouts at me.

Must shut him up…

“Um, well, you know… SKIN and tissue and… stuff,” I say.

He looks at my slyly, “And MILK?” he asks, loud enough for the whole aisle to hear. “There’s MILK in there, right mommy?” he reaches out and gives my boob a good grab for emphasis.

I’m sure my face is as red as the tomato soup that is in danger of being dropped by my now-obviously-laughing friend.

“Um no, no milk in there right now!” I stutter, and frantically push the cart around the corner and into the next aisle.

Must. escape. the. knowing. smiles…

These are the moments that define motherhood, don’t you think?

What is it with kids knowing JUST THE RIGHT MOMENT to come out with this stuff? It is like there is an ‘embarrass Mummy’ fairy that feeds them the lines in the middle of the night.

Well, if I have to be honest, I didn’t realize this was the writing prompt when I wrote my post…but since it definitely meets the criteria, I’m going to go ahead and share it anyway.
How do kids know when to time these moments in order to allow for the maximum embarrassment level? Oh well, at least you probably don’t have to worry about ever running into that man again.

Geez, that sounds so familiar. I think both my boys have done something very similar to me when they were small. Matter of fact my youngest did that very thing to my mom, luckily not in the grocery though. They were home and she called me immediately to inform me that she feels I may have nursed him too long because now he has this fetish (she was only joking and trying to pass on some of the embarrassment).

I wish there was an award for this one. I think I’d have had a STRONG chance of winning.

The only consolation? The post that I’m linking back to is my highest read post on my blog. A lot of people linked to it from their own blogs.

    It’s that embarrassing……

I’m just gonna tell you now that I have an embarrassing moment but I’m not gonna post about it. It was when we got married in Belize and the minister spontaneously asked us if we had “anything to say” like vows, and the hubs just starts spewing nice things while I am in shock (we weren’t saying our own vows!!!!), and when it’s my turn, I say “ditto”. I’m serious. I did.
