And then my heart ran down the sidewalk wearing new shoes and a Darth Vader backpack

September 3, 2008 – 1:01 pm

“Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.” ~Elizabeth Stone

… and there it goes to kindergarten.

Gah! The first day of K5. Very momentous. I know. I’ve done this twice.

And wth? Is Alabama the only state that requires uniforms for public schools? I need to get the hell out of Dodge.

My favorite mom quote and so, so true. My first baby just started grade one this week. I thought it would be easier than K but it wasn’t - not for me anyway, he definitely seemed less anxious!! And next year baby #2 is going to k, he’s a bit more of a handful, so maybe it’ll be a celebration? Nope, more tears I’m sure, even if he’s thrilled to finally go to school like big brother!

I remember when mine was little like that…. The past few years have been okay with sending her off. Next year, when she starts high school, I wonder what that will be like? (Besides me feeling really old, that is)

It is quite an experience to have your heart existing outside of your body and to watch it doing wonderfully completely independent of you.

I stood in the classroom as she unpacked her supplies fighting back tears and saying to the other Moms around me, “I’m not going to be THAT Mom.” It was pure pride that kept those tears at bay until I was back in the car.
