WARNING: If you’re like really, really into politics, you might not want to read this post. Seriously. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Last night I walk downstairs, cup of tea in hand. Jay is sitting on the couch watching TV.
“Whatcha watching?” I ask.
“The Democratic National Convention.”
I look at the screen. Sure enough, some politician-looking guy is standing in front of a bright blue background talking avidly about something. He’s ALL worked up.
“Ewww!” I say, “Why are you watching that? Didn’t you know Bones is on?”
Jay rolls his eyes. “Jen! it’s not every day you get to watch this stuff. This is history in the making.”
I grunt. “Whatever. It seems like a big fat infomercial to me. How many people watch this who aren’t voting democrat? Huh? Huh? It’s like… propaganda.”
(and Bones is high-quality entertainment)
Jay shakes his head in disgust. “It’s NOT propoganda. These are REAL people. This could be our PRESIDENT and VICE PRESIDENT.”
Whatever.
I plop down next to him to watch. CJ joins us. “MOMMY! I don’t want to watch this!” he hollers. But he is overruled by history in the making.
Despite myself I find that I’m sucked in. The excitement on screen is infectious.
Plus they’re promising to do stuff like FIX THE ECONOMY and LOWER GAS PRICES and STOP GLOBAL WARMING. Which all sounds pretty good to me. Although there’s a teeny-tiny voice in the back of my mind that wonders, can you really do ALL THAT in four years?
At least Bones is realistically unrealistic.
As Joe Biden starts shouting “JOHN MCCAIN WAS WRONG! BARACK OBAMA WAS RIGHT!” over and over, CJ looks up at me and says, “Mommy? Who’s Barack Obama?”
“Well,” I scramble trying to come up with an answer, “Barack Obama might be our next president.”
“President?” he wrinkles his nose, “What’s a president?”
“Umm, well… it’s like a KING.” I tell him.
“Ohhhh.” this makes total sense to CJ.
Biden’s speech is drawing to an end and the camera pans behind him to show a row of fans (but really, is there anything else at this event?)
“Hey!” I shout, pointing at the screen, “I recognize that silver-haired guy!”
Jay looks at me in disbelief.
“What?” I ask.
“That’s John Kerry,” he says, his voice thick with disgust.
“Oh.”
What can I say? Politics is not my bag, baby.

On to more serious topics…
I was saddened to hear that blogger Stephanie Nielsen and her husband, Christian, were in an airplane crash and are both are in critical condition. The family has set up a website for them here. Many bloggers are stepping up to help out, including Katie who is currently hosting a silent auction to benefit the Nielsens with money to help with what are sure to be hideously large medical costs. Be sure to stop by and show some support!

Actually, both you and Jay are both right. History and inspiring infomercial.
And boy am I ready for a new king.

This is amusing because of a conversation that I eavesdropped on while the kid and I were out for ice cream the other night. A couple came in with a 3ish year old and a baby and sat right behind us. The guy said “did you watch any of the convention today?” And she said “NO!” in a really incredulous tone. And he said “Did you hear what Bill Clinton said about so-and-so?” And she said “like I care?” And all I could think was that this couple, after obviously a few years together of baby-making, hadn’t taken even one moment to discover what each other’s political views were. Based on the age of their older child, the chances are that they have even been together through a presidential election before.
Maybe talking to your spouse is overrated. :)

Ugh. Politics. I am so over it. I don’t trust any of them, to be honest.
And to think my hubby talks about going into politics. Good grief!!!!

Oh my goodness, I’m SO with you. Dh is one of those who actually knows what’s going on in politics. I’m one who has a marathon session with the voter’s pamphlet and the internet the night before the ballot is due :). And as a new big fan of Bones (love that the first season is on hulu.com), I’d SO rather watch hours of Bones than politics any day!

I watched Hilary the other night and will probably watch Obama speak. I like to hear what they all have to say but my attention span is just too short. I’m just hoping it doesn’t cut into my Big Brother live double eviction. lol! Is that bad?

So yeah, I’m completely 100% with you. Haven’t been watching the DNC. I figure i can just get the recap all over the internet anyway.
Thats how I get the bulk of my news anyway.

So, I like politics. I even blogged about politics today, but I never watch either party’s conventions.
They are so weird with their pins, hats, sticks, anthem songs and balloons. It’s just a vain spectacle.
Definitely would choose Bones over conventions. Actually my pic was watching Project Runway and Sheer Genius last night on TIVO.
Believe me, I have strong political beliefs–I wouldn’t have survived being a College Republican at U.C.Berkeley with a Political Science major without those strong beliefs, but televised conventions? Bleck.
Give me a newspaper anyday for politics.

Yeah, they should have paid Kerry to stay away. And Dukakis. And Edwards.

I’m totally planning on watching the RNC, too, even though I’m a Dem. I was just saying to my hubby last night that I literally can’t believe there are people who might not have heard Obama speak or who are tuning into election season for the first time right now. You make it all so clear. :D

It’s really hard to believe anything said on television anymore. But the political commercials seem to be working. My ten year old and six year old can tell me who is running in each local race and wanted to visit both of their booths at the State Fair recently.

This is a hilarious post and I can totally relate! Politics is really not my thing and I just have the hardest time getting into it. I know I SHOULD care more than I do about who our next President will be, but I just don’t!

that’s ok. I’m not sure I like Biden because of his hair. And after last night’s convention, I feel like writing to the Obama’s – not because of his moving speech but I really want to know if Michelle Obama has a stylist. If she does, she needs to fire her, if she doesn’t, now is the time to find one. Did anyone see those horrible dresses the last two nights?

It’s ok.I Am into politics but I won’t hold it against you ;) I grew up in the Birthplace of Womens Rights so the idea of being a woman and not being an informed voter is unfathomable. It’s hard for me to remember that not every girl has had it drilled into their head since elementary school.
