Basic instinct

July 31, 2008 – 9:51 am

We’re standing on the front deck of the ferry boat, looking out over the water.

Suddenly, Jay steps back from the railing.  He looks slightly shaken.

“What’s up?” I ask.

“It’s the oddest thing,” he says, “I keep getting the strongest urge to throw my glasses over the railing.”

I feel that way sometimes. But usually, I want to ram the car in front of me. But usually, it’s ’cause they’re driving like big giant A-holes.

This happens to me when I sit on the edge of a high place. Somehow I’m convinced that I won’t be able to control jumping off. No, it’s not a suicidal tendency, just a truly bizarre urge.

I can’t help but wonder how funny it would be if he had just thrown them. Now that would have been a sight.

exactly. my mom always says, when she’s in a high place, “I feel like I need to JUMP!” but the glasses thing just totally cracks me up. Talk about instincts gone wrong!

What is the deal with that whole urge thing? I mean I have experienced that, “what if I accidentally jump” or “what if I randomly yelled out right now in church” or whatever. I wonder if there is some sort of psychological explanation for that somewhere. hhhmmm

Oh-I understand where he is coming from. I get those urges all the time. Luckily I can control them most of the time (with the exception of a noisy toy going out the window of my car one day…).

My daughter is ADHD and her worst symptom is impulse control-she randomly walks up to people and smells their hair! Cute maybe when you are 5, not so much when you are 13.

Really? He just wants to throw his glasses overboard? Cause I work on a boat, and many times I find myself wanting to JUMP overboard (and not because the clients are driving me bat-shit crazy, either!). Humph.

I think I heard somewhere that this is a genetic thing, some people have it some don’t. But yeah I always have strange urges like that. I hate it when I have sharp things in my hand and think I should poke myself.

I have only been in Seattle once, but we just HAD to take the ferry. It was pretty cool.

Maybe he was reverting to his childhood days… you know, throwing sticks, leaves and everything else in water and watching them float away.

    Bye-bye!
