Basic instinct

We’re standing on the front deck of the ferry boat, looking out over the water.

Suddenly, Jay steps back from the railing.  He looks slightly shaken.

“What’s up?” I ask.

“It’s the oddest thing,” he says, “I keep getting the strongest urge to throw my glasses over the railing.”

  4. This happens to me when I sit on the edge of a high place. Somehow I’m convinced that I won’t be able to control jumping off. No, it’s not a suicidal tendency, just a truly bizarre urge.

I can’t help but wonder how funny it would be if he had just thrown them. Now that would have been a sight.

  7. What is the deal with that whole urge thing? I mean I have experienced that, “what if I accidentally jump” or “what if I randomly yelled out right now in church” or whatever. I wonder if there is some sort of psychological explanation for that somewhere. hhhmmm

  8. Oh-I understand where he is coming from. I get those urges all the time. Luckily I can control them most of the time (with the exception of a noisy toy going out the window of my car one day…).

My daughter is ADHD and her worst symptom is impulse control-she randomly walks up to people and smells their hair! Cute maybe when you are 5, not so much when you are 13.

  9. Really? He just wants to throw his glasses overboard? Cause I work on a boat, and many times I find myself wanting to JUMP overboard (and not because the clients are driving me bat-shit crazy, either!). Humph.
