So a while back I told you that I got the new cookbook by Jerry Seinfeld’s wife called Deceptively Delicious… Remember?
And then I told you how I thought it would be a fun bonding experience to spend an evening pureeing with my husband…
Except I was WRONG and it wasn’t fun at ALL? Remember that?
This is THE REST OF THE STORY – my attempt at sneaking some nutrition into my boys’ diet (because Jay needs it just as bad as CJ, if not worse).
If you DON’T remember (shame on you!) Part I, in which I puree the socks out of a bundle of veggies, it turned out to be rather un-fun.
Part II, however, is MUCH more optimistic.
I have been Cooking! Dinner! Nightly! (Well, PRACTICALLY nightly)
And the dinners have been Delicious! Nutritious! Veggilicious!
I’ll cut right to the punch line. Deceptively Delicious? I’m a fan!
I guess some celebrity’s wives (with their highly trained staff of chefs, nutritionists, and food preparation experts) may ACTUALLY have something to offer the rest of us!
All of the recipes (with the exception of one) have been really easy and impressively good.
So far I’ve made:
Italian meatloaf
Green eggs (YES, they are green!)
Scrambled eggs
Pancakes
Banana bread (this is the one I wasn’t too fond of)
Baked egg puffs
Macaroni and cheese
Sloppy Joes
I’ve also started adding vegetable purees to random things with surprisingly good success!
And so I’m here to tell you that I do believe the pureeing mess is worth it. Also, I’ve discovered that having a SYSTEM* and the right equipment helps a lot. Also ditching that whiny guy who I married ten years ago. Yeah, he’s no longer welcome in the kitchen during puree time.
I liked the cookbook SO MUCH that I decided that you, my dearest readers, need to have it. So I contacted the company and, voila! They agreed to give me a few copies to give away.
Leave a comment on this post before Wed, Dec 12th and I’ll enter you in the giveaway. One comment per person, please. Also, make sure your comment includes a link to your blog or your email so that I have a way of contacting you if you win!
*Here’s my system, for those of you ready to give Deceptively Delicious a try. After pureeing, pour the purees into a muffin tin (which should measure approx 1/4 cup per) and freeze for approx 1 hour. When hardened, deposit the frozen purees into a freezer bag (one type of veggie per bag). When reheating, take out the number of needed purees and reheat in microwave safe bowl. MUCH easier than trying to pour smooshy-gushy puree into a freezer bag, let me assure you!
***
Congratulations to Renae H and Erin who each won a copy of Deceptively Delicious! (Winners were selected with help of the Random Number generator at random.org. It wasn’t a particularly deceptive or delicious way to choose, but it did seem fair.)

I’ve never commented before but read your blog often and I just want to say you are a fabulous writer and thoroughly enjoy them all!

Count me in! My toddler son is such a picky eater that I worry he’s not getting proper nutrition. I’ve heard so many good things about his book!

Oh, please pick me – *I* need it just as much as anyone! My husband and daughter will eat just about anything. Me, and my son? Not so much.

*Arms waving wildly*. Pick me, pick me!
December 5, 2007 at 9:07 pm
Thanks for the great contest :)
December 5, 2007 at 10:04 pm
So I’m replying, but not entering your contest. :-) I’m a fan of the book also. This week I’m making the Chicken Nuggets and the Burgers #2 again, both of which were huge hits with both Hubby and kids. :) The two recipes that I haven’t been thrilled with were Spaghetti Pie and Scrambled Eggs. The Spaghetti Pie turned out watery and not good. I want to try it one more time before writing that one off.
The other one, scrambled eggs, I modified and the kids loved! I added whole eggs, not just whites and changed the Parmesan cheese to regular cheese sprinkled on the top. It was a hit!!
I love the idea of adding more veggies into your every day cooking.
December 5, 2007 at 10:06 pm
Ooh, I’ve been wanting this book. Please pick me! Would you send it to me even if I live just north of you in BC? :D

I have the eating habits of a 5-year-old. A friend of mine made this amaaaazing soup and I was all, “what’s in it!” and she rattled off pretty much every vegetable I hate. But they were all pureed! In the soup! Which tasted like heaven! So, you know, it also works on grown ups.
December 5, 2007 at 11:04 pm
I am so happy to hear this worked out for you. I remember reading your first post and being slightly disappointed. I would love to give it a try if I am the winner. Love your blog but never comment.
December 5, 2007 at 11:13 pm
Count me in too. My 4-year-old can spot a green fleck of broccoli in her cheese sauce a mile away.

Wanted to have you peek at my blog- a bunch of us Mommy bloggers are trying to make a difference this Holiday season…

With two little ones I could use this cookbook :)
December 6, 2007 at 1:07 am
Interesting concept… I’m curious! Good for you for cooking! Puree or not, home cooking with real ingredients (no canned soup etc.) is ALWAYS better for everyone and really not that much more effort!
December 6, 2007 at 5:02 am
I’ve had my eye on that cook book for a while. I hope I win!

I need this book – not for my kids but for myself! I hate veggies – do you think by the time I’m done pureeing, freezing and then sneak it into my food that I’ll forget it’s in there? ? ?

Then she throws them on the floor. Good times.

This is EXACTLY what our family needs. I can’t get my 11 year old to eat anything that looks remotely healthy, let alone green!
December 6, 2007 at 9:39 am
I’m a new reader – love your blog. My husband would love me if we added more veggies to anything and everything. Hooray for free stuff!
December 6, 2007 at 10:17 am
okay…i’m convinced. I’d love to have a chance to win this book. Particularly since my newest little boy absolutely refuses veggies…even mashed potatoes…..(something is definitely wrong with him…LOL). I have to figure out a way to sneak in some veggies.
December 6, 2007 at 10:29 am
COunt me in – my niece only eats mac and cheese!
Thanks

Hi from just across the border! I’d love to win this cookbook. Our kiddos all have different allergies, so we need to try different kinds of things all the time. This would be great!
December 6, 2007 at 5:51 pm
Oh, yeah, enter me. Does it suggest a way to inject the veggies into a McDonald’s chicken nugget? Because that would be helpful.
December 6, 2007 at 7:51 pm
I have been very interested in trying this book, so count me in!
December 6, 2007 at 8:11 pm
Dying for this….this will be my new bible. My kid is awful, if it isn’t a chicken nugget, pizza, or a grilled cheese…she won’t eat it!

Pick me, pick me! :) We need some veggies in our diet, ecspecially since I’m pregnant. Think of my poor little baby (did that get the sympathy vote?) Seriously though, thanks for the fun giveaway!
December 7, 2007 at 2:05 am
I really want to read this! I really believe in giving kids veggies early on so they develop a taste and even a preference for them!

December 7, 2007 at 12:11 pm
I’m really interested in this concept, so enter me in the drawing. But I want to know – were you kidding about going the babyfood route? Because I actually think that could work. I mean, they’re just smooshed up veggies, right??
December 7, 2007 at 12:25 pm
Me! Me! Last night my son’s gag reflex went wild when I forced him to eat two tiny pieces of broccoli.

Will you mail me the book in Israel if I win? I read your blog all the time and truly enjoy your Northwest Perspective. Like a bit of home. Most Americans here are from NY, and are like, “what? Seattle? Is that why you’re so weird, and refuse to use an umbrella and take your new baby out in the cold? (45 degrees and drizzle, a perfect Seattle day…)”

oh man, i would love to have this book. hubby and i have been looking into it, and were thinking that it might be helpful for Zander. the very very very few solid things he will eat are…shall we say not of the nutritious persuasion. it would be nice to see if we could get this book to work with his eating therapy!

I just found your blog today and have spent way too much time reading the posts! I’ve already asked for the book for Christmas, but my husband won’t get it for me because HE’S the one who won’t eat veggies. He’s afraid I’ll start spiking everything with celery and carrots. :)
For that reason alone, I’d love to have this book. Merry Christmas!
December 11, 2007 at 3:22 pm
Oh – I am all over this! Pick me! Pick me!!!!
December 11, 2007 at 7:51 pm
Oh WOW! If I could get the husband to eat undercover veggies that would be fabulous! If I don’t win, I will have to purchase a copy since you say it is so good
December 11, 2007 at 8:32 pm
I’m feeling lucky. Let’s throw this hat in the proverbial ring (though I don’t think there was ever a proverb about such a ring)
December 12, 2007 at 7:24 am
Okay, I’ll try. Even though I’m fairly sure my kids will be able to pick out the slightest fleck of nutrition and fling it back in my face.
I might fool my husband though. It’s worth it just for that.
December 12, 2007 at 9:47 am
My veggie loving daughter just started turning her nose up at ALL vegetables. And will only eat two kinds of fruit.
I’d love to get the veggies back into her diet!

I would LOVE to get my grubby paws on a copy of Deceptively Delicious! Our world is about to get REALLY busy – three boys moving in on January 3rd! Yay! – and something tells me that veggies are going to be a hard sell in the near future.. :)
December 12, 2007 at 5:20 pm
I did find myself flipping through it today at the store, and thinking that it might be a cook book we would actually use and feel so virtuous at the same time! So enter me in the contest, too. “parker” needs some veggies other than.. hmm, what veggies does he eat anyways? oops, bad mommy moment.
