As the Dead Skin Flies, I have a Big Idea

November 3, 2007 – 4:43 pm

So yesterday I was complaining to my sister about the state of my skin.

“The closer I get to 30, the more I find pimples popping up in preposterous places!” I moaned.

“It’s like they want to be here to celebrate the beginning of my 3rd decade of life. And I DEFINITELY did not invite them.”

My sister, in all her infinite wisdom, had just the answer.

“Well, do you exfoliate?” she asked.

My eyes grew round at her use of such a BIG and FANCY word. “exfoli-what?”

Sis nodded, her suspicions confirmed. “Mm-hmm. Just as I thought. Jen, you have to EXFOLIATE!”

“But I don’t have TIME!!!!” I whined. This is my excuse for everything… and more and more, people are calling my bluff. Sure enough, Mo did too.

“What do you mean you don’t have time? You shower, don’t you?”

I shifted uncomfortably under her penetrating gaze. “Mmm… sometimes…”

“Ok, well all you have to do is get some of those exfoliating bath gloves and use them when you shower. Put them on and give yourself a good rub down. It gets rid of all that nasty dead skin and helps prevent blackheads and pimples. Plus it feels good… in a vigorous rubbing sort of way!”

Well… that certainly sounds doable. Plus it involves shopping at the drug store, one of my favorite pastimes.

I’m in!

So I bought the gloves. And this morning? I was actually EXCITED to hop in the shower and give them a try.

Rub-a-rub-dub… two gloves in a tub…

Ok, so clearly the vigorous rub-down went straight to my head.

And as the dead skin flew about me (I couldn’t exactly see it, but I knew it was there), I had a Big Idea.

The very best beauty tips that I’ve ever gotten have come from either,
a) A girlfriend
b) My sister, or
c) My mom

Which points to the rather obvious conclusion, that:

We women KNOW our products.

We KNOW our beautification techniques.

We know what works, and we’re EXPERTS on what doesn’t work.

We need to take advantage of this circle of hotness! This built-in network of knowing! The sisterhood of secrets!

And so, the Big Idea.

I’m thinking of starting a regular post where I share the beautification secrets of my own (and my girlfriends’, sister’s, and mom’s) with all of YOU.

If you like, you can join me. Maybe on a set day of the week, or the month… we’ll mark a day to revel in our shared wealth of beauty knowledge. Sort of like a slumber party, only without the pillow fights.

I’m still trying to decide on a name for this grand event of exfoliation and excitement.

Here’s what I’ve come up with so far (weigh in, won’t you?)

  • Hot Tips
  • Beautify me
  • Hot Mamas Know
  • Circle of beauty

What do you think? Are you interested?

Oh, and while you’re thinking about it, go try those exfoliation mits. They’re awesome… seriously.

Fun idea. My aunt always said wear beautiful underwear. Even if your days goes terribly, you can be smug in the knowlege that at least your underwear is gorgeous.

I think it’s a great idea. Personally, I’m always looking for the currently trendy haircuts and such. However, I don’t care about trendy on actresses, I care about trendy on real women. People that actually might have to be practical and raise a child or go to an office 9-5. Know what I mean? I think there is actually a shortage of beauty sites that cater to the real world.

    A) Fabulous Idea!
    B) You’re not even 30 yet? Piss OFF!
    C) I love exfoliating. I prefer the sugar or salt based scrubs and need them to be pretty tough. No little jojoba beads for me, Thank you.

Ooooh… just told daughter about those. We are definitely going to look for some the next time we’re shopping. Thank you! (Since I can’t believe at nearly 50 I still get the odd pimple to go along with the emerging wrinkles….)

I think it’s a great idea to have the beauty tips, and like “Hot Mammas Know” too….

I’m in. I had to take a moment to recover after reading that you DON’T. EXFOLIATE.

The mits are awesome - but for your face can be a bit abrasive - have you tried a nice beta hydroxy acid peel? You can always e-mail me, sister. Here with a litany of products to recommend….

I seriously would love this!!! I NEED this… really… I’m so much of a tomboy… that when I was told I should pluck my eyebrows, I threatened someone with a gun!

Oh, and I also like “Hot Mamas” (does that include me, even if I’m not a mom? Sure it does… right?) Well, I’m a step-mom anyway.

AND, I agree with zaya totally - I don’t give a rat’s behind about what works for the celebrities. I wanna know what works for normal ‘real’ women!

Not 30 yet??? I’d call you a young-un, but I’m only 32 and refuse to grow up, so I can’t say anything ;-)

Ok, sorry for the long comment… I’m done rambling now.

Ok, at nearly 40, I need help! I’ve exfoliated. Once this summer, and once last winter. Isn’t that enough? I guess the fact that I currently have THREE zits should open my eyes, eh?
and my eyebrows? Yeah, a couple years ago my hairdresser had my head back in the sink and she said “I can’t take it anymore, I’m waxing your eyebrows.” and she’s done it every month or so since. (sigh)
So I’d love the series, but I’m afraid I could not contribute much. :(

You would think that once we’ve passed that adolescence phase, the pimples would be a thing of the past, right? Wrong! And it doesn’t get any better after 30!!! LOL So do the exfoliating gloves really get rid of the pimples? If so, I must go buy them!
P.S. Love your blog. Gives me my laugh for the day!

This is a great idea; I’d read and play, if I can think of any beautifying tips.

The only one I can think of right now is that I buy (drugstore) foundation in two shades; My skin is very light, and I feel like the skin tone differs from day to day, depending on how much sleep I’ve been getting, how much time I spent outdoors the day before, etc. With two shades in the house, I can mix a dab on my fingertips, and get something closer to my natural shade for the day.

It sounds difficult but it’s not, really. And I don’t end up leaving the house with my makeup looking too pasty or too overdone.

Oh, and I like Hot Mamas, too

I think it’s going to take a diamond bit sander for me, but I’m in. What a great idea.

I’ve been using soy oil right on my skin out of the shower (like some people use baby oil) and it’s amazing!

You visionary, you! Love the idea, under any name, it smells great.

I also recommend the long-handled body scrub brush to get those hard-to-reach places. Then you train your four-year-old kid to do it for you since she invades every shower anyway….until she breaks it while playing. Rats!

My eyebrows — I’ve never plucked or waxed them.

    Nothing. Nada.

I tell myself they’re so light that their unshapeliness is quite all right, but — I know. Well, I know they need shaping, but I have no idea how to do it.

I am the worst with taking care of my skin. I had a facial a year ago and the woman couldn’t believe I don’t use moisturizer every night. I told her I am lucky if I get my contact lenses out and brush my teeth before I pass out. She didn’t think it was charming; she was dead serious that I really should be in a routine of exfoliating, cleansing, moisturizing and doing masks once a week. Unfortunately I probably won’t be able to do that faithfully until my kids are a little older when I have time…of course by then it might be too late.
