The mummies are coming

Last night, I found myself with a splitting headache. Maybe it was caused by the stress of living amidst a major episode of ULTIMATE MAKEOVER HOME EDITION (sans the extra large work crews and mega budget). Maybe it was allergies, or maybe it was just random… who can say.

At any rate, I collapsed into the big blue velvet arm chair in our living room and announced to CJ, “Don’t bother mommy… She has a HEADACHE.”

At which point my sweet and snuggly little boy proceeded to climb into my lap and give me the warmest, tightest hug. It was such a dear hug that it almost made my headache go away. Except it didn’t.

“Mommy?” CJ peered up into my eyes with a very serious expression. “Mommy, do you want me to read you some stories?”

“Sure CJ,” I said, unable to resist the sweetness that was my little boy at this moment.

He pulled a paperback from the bookshelf behind us. He looked at it, thinking.

“Ok. THIS ONE is a scary one. It is called…” he paused, thoughtfully. Then, running his finger across each word on the book cover as if he was reading them one-by-one he said dramatically,

“The skeleton turns into a BONE!” his eyes widened and sparkled as he looked at me to see the effect of this VERY SCARY announcement.

I looked suitably horrified. He pulled out the next one.

“This one is EVEN SCARIER. It’s called…

The MUMMIES are coming. And they will kill everybody. And break the whole world!”

“Is that scary, mommy?”

“That’s VERY SCARY, CJ.” I agreed, hugging him close. “I’m sooooo scared.”

“Don’t worry, mommy.” he said, patting me on the head. He reached for another book. “The next one is not scary.”

“See, it says right here…” and again he ran his finger across each word, feigning reading.

This book is NOT SCARY AT ALL. That’s what it’s called, mommy.”

He pulled out another, “This is about FORESTES.”

Now we were getting into a rhythm. So I was surprised when he pulled out the next book, looked at it, and then pushed it back into the bookshelf with a disgusted expression.

“CJ,” I said, curious, “What was that one you just put back?”

He grimaced, holding it out. “It’s about a lady.”

Oh, the HORROR!
