Let them eat lard

On Wednesday morning, CJ and I took a field trip. As his teacher, world educator, wizened leader, and etiquette instructor, I take very seriously my responsibility to provide him with enriching cultural activities. I carefully plan our days, ensuring that we have just the right balance of arts, science, world history, socialization, and politics. Well, except for 364 1/2 days out of the year when I just wing it and pick out THINGS THAT SEEM FUN.

Which brings me back to our field trip. We hopped in the car and drove a few miles to have breakfast at a local jaunt by the name of Krispy Kreme. That’s right, deliciously gooey, oh-so-fattening, made-on-an-assembly-line-right-before-your eyes DONUTS.

We munched on our donuts in the plastic covered chairs while watching the gleaming vats of grease frying little balls of goodness. It was fun. And I vowed that we would return.

If you like this picture, you’ll LOVE this.

I like to think of it as doing my part for the national obesity epidemic.

  1. Glad to hear you enjoyed your yummy donuts! I remember getting donuts on Saturday mornings with my mom…a great memory.

    Lard is goooood!

Thanks for the link, too. (As if I need more things to look at, but that one was definitely worth it! My favorite was the one about doctors favorite cigs!)

  2. Sounds like my kind of field trip. I LOVE Krispy Kreme!

    Great link.

  3. Yum – donuts! (drool, drool)

  4. Krispy Kreme donuts are some mouth watering, ooey gooey goodness!!!!! Clogged arteries be damned!

  5. I heart lard. Seriously. Everything tastes better when cooked in it.

  6. It used to be that donuts would make me sick. I mean like vomitting sick. I have no idea why. So there were several years were I just wouldn’t eat them.
Dammit all if my body didn’t recover from that and now I’ll eat them by the truckload.
    *sigh*

  7. I knew I liked you for a reason! All too often I get to liking someone, and they turn on me and declare their love for *gasp* Dunkin Donuts, and I fall to pieces. Those things aren’t even real donuts!

    You have fabulous taste!

  8. Sweet Boy attended a wonderful (and wonderfully expensive) day camp this summer. They took 2 fieldtrips during the 7-week program. Bet you can’t guess where they went for the first one?

See, apparently KK IS a legit field trip. You’re a genius!

  9. Dude, I can down a box of those on my own . . . given the chance.

My kids love watching the production line of donuts too — even better if the light is on and you get piping hot ones for free!!!

  10. Ah, yup – now you’ve hit MY sweet spot – fried dough….BOOYAH!

  11. Oh my lord, I’m glad I found your blog. Those ads on Don’t Try This at Home? Funniest thing ever.

BTW, we eat lard on a semi-regular basis since we live only about half a mile from Krispy Kreme and can virtually smell the sweet aroma of lard and sugar from the yard.

  12. Ahh I love this post. This is right in line with the “Does the number of McDonald’s Happy Meal toys my son has in any way correlate to how good (or bad) of a mother I am??” chapter in my “Mother’s Guilt” book!

  13. Love the Kripsy Kreme! YUM!

Anna always loves to go there too.

  14. OK can we get our kids together for a playdate?! I love Krispy Kreme. Unfortunately people in MA are so loyal to Dunkin Donuts that our Krispy Kreme went out of business. Unless there’s another one I don’t know of…

  15. Great vintage poster — and I remember taking my son to watch the donuts at Krispy Kreme, too. Horrors, though, they’ve torn a few down here in Paradise. GASP!
