What have YOU been sniffing?

May 15, 2007 – 7:22 am

Just when you start thinking that dogs are people, they do something to remind you that… well, they’re not.

Take the other day, for example, when my sister and I were on our daily run/walk with her dog, Zsoi. Zsoi is the most wonderful dog EVER. If I wasn’t deathly allergic, I’d even pet her!

Anyway, we were running along nicely when all of a sudden we passed something that was so attractive, so luscious and mouth-wateringly appealing that Zsoi came to a dead halt, her nose glued to the (you guessed it) huge pile of fresh dog poop. Zsoi’s eyes were slightly rolled back and her tongue lolled out of her mouth in a drool-enhanced euphoria. She sniffed and sniffed, wanting to inhale every precious portion of the ghastly pile.

Ewww! I thought, clearly dogs are NOT people. Because no self-respecting person would be the slightest bit drawn to that.

Or would they?

So it’s true that people are not drawn to some of the disgusting things that dogs find so irresistible, like dog poop, or dead animals, or rotting food. But it’s also true that we do tend to be susceptible to the allure of a different (but no less gross) type of smelly mess… the kind that you find parading the checkout line at your local grocery store.

The latest Paris Hilton scandal, for example, or the thing about David Hasselhoff. Or the mom who started a fight on her kid’s school bus. Or the feud between Scary Spice and Eddie Murphy. Are Brad and Angelina breaking up? And just how much weight has Celebrity X gained or lost?

Who CARES?

Well… a lot of people, turns out. We sniff, we move in closer, we check out every angle… Maybe we aren’t as different from our lovable drooling friends as we’d like to think.

MAYBE the latest celeb scandal is just our version of a big smelly pile of poop… and we can’t get enough.

Which brings me to today’s question: What have YOU been sniffing?

Oh for sure! People love piles of poop. Only we call that pile of poop “gossip”. Be it celeb gossip, playgroup gossip, neighbor gossip, office gossip, I think the people who never participate in any gossip are few and far between.

What have I been sniffing lately? Hmmmm…probably playgroup gossip during the latest round of playgroup drama. yes, the drama llama rides again!

I’m too busy sniffing up wonderful blogs like yours to do the gossip thing too much. Really do love your blog.

My Sniff Du Jour is Reality TV. Cant. Seem. To. Get. Enough. Of. It. I may seek treatment.

    Have a great week.

    Haha. Brilliant!

As for what I’ve been sniffing, I have to say that I haven’t been sniffing ANYTHING lately (except for the real estate market, which I put right up there with the dead animals and piles of poop) but I’m sorely behind on all my celeb gossip. Shameful, I know! (Normally I actually keep up on that stuff too, though. What’s wrong with us?)

Great post! hehe I love to hear all the gossip, but I seem to miss it. Instead of having the TV (when the boys aren’t around) on, I have the computer on.

With a title like that, how can I NOT sniff your blog?

But yes, as Glenn Frey says, “people love dirty laundry.”

I used to be into celeb gossip. Then I moved to the states and didn’t have a clue who a lot of the celebs were so I wasn’t as interested. More than 4 years away from Ireland, I have no clue who a lot of the celebs there or in the UK are now, so I’m not as interested. Ta da - I’m cured! And the only sniffing I do these days is for investigative purposes to determine which of my cherubs needs a diaper change :)
