Other people’s puppies and Gas X - a few things I think are just great

May 18, 2007 – 7:00 am

As you may or may not know, I subscribe to Oprah magazine. Mostly I like it. I admire Oprah, really I do, and most of the articles in her magazine are inspirational, interesting, and fun to read.

diamond ringBut then… there’s this one section, called “A few things I think are just great” Which should probably be renamed, “A few things that you’ll like but could never afford” OR “I’m rich and you’re not, neener neener neener!”

These pages are where Oprah “highlights” some of her “finds” for the month. Excuse me, but I just have to say that a set of $65 paper napkins is not “a find”. Neither is jewelry that costs thousands of dollars.

In fact, I’d wager that if you showed me the most expensive version of anything, I’d say it’s JUST GREAT too!

So, as my way of FIGHTING BACK on behalf of the poor, repressed, non-millionaires everywhere (Just think of me as the Joan of Arc of the blogosphere) here’s MY LIST of “a few things that I think are just great,”

Value Village. I went today (it was my first time) and OH YEAH, you’ll be hearing more about my new-found love, believe me.

Talking Rain. It’s bubbly, it’s flavorful, it’s fun… and there’s no calories AND no creepy alternative sugar. Give me another bottle, quick!

Strollerderby. Do you strollerderby?
If you don’t… you don’t know what you’re missing. A little bit of this, a little bit of that… celeb gossip, parenting news, funny, witty, sarcastic… Try it, you’ll like it.

Other people’s puppies. They’re so cute. They’re so fluffy… and how can you not LOVE their sweet little noses and speshew paws. Best of all… I don’t have to clean up their pee in the middle of the night. LOVE that!

Gas-X. It truly is the cure for what ails. How did I go through 27 years without knowing about this stuff?

I love Oprah, but yea - not a realistic viewpoint in terms of “great buys”.

Ok, I don’t know what Talking Rain is but you have my interest!

I totally agree about the Gas X! All of these years I thought my PMS bloating was water but noooooo. It’s the farts, though NOT the juicy farts!

But I’m not sure if I agree about the Strollerderby. Maybe I was burned by just a couple of posts that seemed, well overblowing the minority. Like micromanaging parents. Seriously….WHERE do these micromanaging parents who detail every second of their kids’ lives live? But perhaps S.D. would be a good place for me to blog about what they blog about? Hmmmm. Can I add another 3 hours to my day to fit it in? hehe.

I didn’t renew my subscription to Oprah - after reading that she recommends 800 dollar chanel flip flops - FLIP FLOPS??? I thought, ‘I’m not the demographic they have in mind for this magazine’ lol!

I came back to add that ITA about the Oprah thing. Seriously, does she think her great finds apply to anyone but .0010% of the population?

You ARE the Joan of Arc, and we will refrain from burning you at the stake…

Great post, by the way (as usual!)

Yeah see, when your “Oprah” $65 is like finding a penny on the ground. It’s a find for her.

    BTW- Gas-X?!?!

It’s about time someone speaks up for the masses! Maybe Oprah can spare some of her money for you to start up your own magazine :)!!

Interesting. Very interesting. I suspect I could do with some Gas-X but I’m not sure it’s available here in New Zealand! Cool blog. Thanks for your thoughts. I enjoyed reading.

I agree her “things I think are great” section is obnoxious … as is her photo on the cover EVERY SINGLE MONTH!!

I enjoyed your list. I’ve never tried Gas X or Talking Rain before …

This is a comment for your newest post, but for the life of me I can’t find the comment button for that post. Maybe I should sleep more.

Anyway, if you like “Rich Dad, Poor Dad,” you should check out “Richest Man in Babylon” and “The Millionaire Next Door.” They’re in the same field, and also pretty interesting reads.

I love O–I’m a magazine junkie–but for fucks sake Oprah, let someone else grace the cover–just once!!
