We’re so smart
April 1, 2007 – 6:21 pmMy dear husband and I are fairly educated, mostly intelligent people who like to think we are at least somewhat up on world events. But every once in a while we hit a pot-hole in the road of educated conversation.
Take this morning, for example.
Jay: Woah, there’s weird stuff going on in the world (he’s reading The Week)
Me: Yeah? (pours more coffee)
Jay: Did you know there’s a country called Myanmar?
Me: Mi-mar?
Jay: Mi-En-Mar
Me: uh, no…
Jay: It’s in Asia.
Me: Hmm
Jay: Well anyway, their government is ruled by a junta.
Me: A what?
Jay: A junta. It’s a military thing.
Me: Oh.
Jay: So anyway, the junta… well, let me just read you the article.
Yes indeed. I think I get a big fat F for worldwide awareness this morning. But I do have an excuse… I think I got a total of 3 hours of sleep last night thanks to THE COUGH from the black lagoon.
And since I can’t in good conscience knowingly remain in the dark, I NOW know that:
That map on the upper right? That’s Myanmar. It’s a country known for magnificent Buddhist temples that has been ruled for the last 30 years by a repressive military government. And if you’re thinking, “What an idiot! EVERYBODY knows about Myanmar!” PLEASE don’t comment. I’m really not up for attacks on my character this morning, and I do have the power to delete.

Is Myanmar the country formally known as Burma?
I swear I’m smart, too. I’m just not so good on current/world/geographical events.
Hope your cough goes away pronto. That’s Spanish. See, I told you I was smart.

‘The power to delete.’ I LOVED that. Now, don’t you just wish the rest of life was that easy?!

You’re one up on me. My dh tries to keep me up to date on current events. But the crap he reads to me, he reads just to have something to bitch about. (because I’m the perfect wife, remember?) Like I want to start my day off hearing him rant and rave about political corruption and other bad stuff? NOpe…ignorance truly is bliss. I just want to sit with my coffee and read funny blogs, thank you!
