Everything’s negotiable (STOMP STOMP)
April 3, 2007 – 7:00 amYesterday morning, if you’d been eavesdropping at our house you’d have overheard this…
CJ: I want to go to the Nose!
Me: I don’t think we’re going anywhere. You haven’t been listening all morning.
CJ: I’m sorry mom, now I’m listening!
Me: That’s not how it works, CJ.
CJ: Well… We can just talk about it.
We went to Gasworks Park instead. I didn’t give in! Did I?
Later on, same day…
Jay: CJ, you need to sit down RIGHT NOW and eat your dinner.
CJ: I’m mad! (stomps his foot) I’m NOT eating my dinner.
Jay: Do you want to just go straight to bed with no dinner?
CJ: I SAID I’m mad (stomp stomp)
Jay: Well, mad boys go to bed, nice boys eat dinner. Which are you?
CJ: Well… Sometimes I feel angry and I stomp my foot. And when I’m angry… I’m alone…
Jay: (looks at me incredulously.) uh…
Me: (thinking this must be my fault) Um, CJ, do you mean what we talked about that, when you feel angry, you should go somewhere alone and stomp your feet? (we did have that conversation long ago…)
CJ: (STOMP) I’m ANGRY!
Me: Well, it’s ok to be angry, but it’s not ok to be mean.
Jay: And you need to eat your dinner.
CJ: I’m NOT EATING MY DINNER (STOMP STOMP STOMP)
Jay: Fine. But bedtime is in 8 minutes, so you decide if you want to eat your dinner. But you’re going to bed in 8 minutes no matter what.
CJ: I’m going to put my shoes on so I can stomp REALLY LOUD
(he goes and gets his shoes and puts them on. This is the first time I’ve ever seen him put his shoes on by himself… they’re even on the right feet!)
Me: (to Jay) I didn’t know he could put on his shoes?
Jay: Of course he can. If he wants to.
CJ: (STOMP STOMP STOMP)

Haha! Isn’t it cute how, when it fits their purpose, they can do something that they normally make us do for them? Like put on shoes. Oh yeah, btdt!
