Dumb, stupid, and me
March 15, 2007 – 3:36 pmThis is the conversation that CJ and I had last night over dinner.
CJ: You’re dumb.
Me: Don’t say that. that’s not nice. We don’t say people are dumb.
CJ: No, you told me to say ‘dumb’ instead of ’stupid.’
So I did. Hmmm…
Me: Yeah, but you don’t call people dumb. It hurts their feelings. You wouldn’t like it if I called you dumb, would you?
CJ: I AM dumb.
Me: No you’re not. Don’t say that.
CJ: I’m stupid. (satisfied smirk)
There are days where I really don’t think I’m smart enough to be this child’s mother.

Really? Just a few days? Kid sounds like a genius! That was pretty clever.
A friend of mine said she stopped “debating” with her 2 year old, because she was afraid she would eventually lose.

I understand completely how you feel. My husband and I are always coming across things with our kids to prove they are smarter than us. It is a bit scary at times :)

I have a great story for you in the same vein….
So when my oldest daughter (now 10) was about 6 we had the toothbrush battles. She was loosing teeth and getting new big teeth and everything was all uneven and it made for difficulty in getting her teeth clean. So it became the toohbrush battles. You know, she goes into the bathroom and brushes her teeth for 2.5 seconds and then comes out of the bathroom feeling suffiencently satisfied that she’s done an excellent job. So we got into the habit of after toothbrushing time to do a “Tooth Inspection”. So one day she comes to me and shows me her teeth and I point out all these areas that she’s missed. So I explain to her how important doing a good job is to avoid cavities, etc and show her the areas that need further attention and walk with her back into the bathroom. She begins to brush her teeth again and then suddenly stops, pulls her toothbrush out her mouth and says to me. “Well mom, if you’re so good at brushing teeth…why do you have so many cavities?” Needless to say I stood there stunned for about 45 seconds while attempting not to laugh and then replied “Because when I was 6 my mom didn’t do tooth inspections!”
I hate when my kids catch me off guard! =)
