Top 5 unexpected benefits of quitting my job

February 5, 2007 – 5:27 pm

While sipping my second cup of coffee, the realization hit me– today is the beginning of my second month at home. Can it really have been a month already? Unbelievable!

I hope it’s not a sign that I’m starting off month 2 with a series of unfortunate events… CJ has a cough, I have a sore throat, and Jason’s off to NYC for the week. Ugh- this could be ugly.

BUT, as a believer in the power of positive thinking I will ignore the above, and bravely forge ahead with a more optimistic post. I thought, to commemorate the 1 month milestone, I should list the…

TOP 5 unexpected benefits of quitting my job:

  1. Clear skin. Shocking yet delightful. If I knew that this would happen… I’d have quit ages ago!
  2. Improved relations with my family. From day 1, I felt an almost imperceptible loosening up inside myself; suddenly I am so much more laid-back, cheerful, and patient. Almost a nice person! And of course this is only a good thing when it comes to putting up with (did I say that??) the quirks and nuances of family relations.
  3. Writing, writing, writing. I’ve always loved to write. But in the craziness of college/career I somehow lost sight of my favorite hobby. And now, thanks to the wonderful advent of the BLOG along with the gift of MORE TIME, I’m writing again! Who knows, maybe I’ll even write an article… or a book. Wouldn’t that be fantastic?
NEWSFLASH on this topic: I will soon be blogging for the Seattle P.I.! Look for more on this, coming soon!
  4. Natural Light, Fresh Air, and Movement. This one should have been obvious… but somehow it wasn’t. I guess I’d been brainwashed by long, hard years behind a desk under flourescent lighting breathing recirculated air to think that that was the only way. Well, I’m here to tell you… there’s a better way! It’s being outside, in the SUNshine (or even cloud cover!) breathing FRESH AIR and MOVING AROUND. It is amazing. I feel so much more alive!
Oops. In the original post I forgot number 5… is my mind slipping from not enough mental stimulation? That can’t be it… can it? And now for the long-awaited #5 (drumroll please)…
  5. Really getting to know the fair city of Seattle. It’s been great to be able to tour around Seattle, and even better to do so on weekdays when parks and museums aren’t jam-packed with traffic. My goal for the next few months is to visit ALL the parks in Seattle so that I can put together a top ten list. We’re already well on our way… in just the first month, here are a smattering of the outings we’ve taken…
    - Olympic Sculpture Park
    - Volunteer Park
    - Carkeek Park
    - Woodland Park
    - Woodland Park Zoo
    - Seattle Aquarium
    - Magneson Park
    - Greenwood Park
    - Greenlake Library
    - and of course Greenlake

On to month 2. It must be the power of positive thinking… I am convinced it’s going to be a great month!
