Day 1- Slightly bewildered

So it’s my first day of my new life. It went something like this…

I wake up, shower, drink my coffee, and off to preschool with CJ. I get back home to an overwhelming sense of “Now what?”

Have some more coffee (that always seems to help) and pull out a fresh yellow notepad and my best flowy-ink pen (no, that’s not the technical term) and start to make a comprehensive checklist. There’s something so wonderfully empowering about jotting everything down in a nicely organized fashion with a neat row of checkboxes along-side. Where better to start.

Check. Checklist complete.

Now what? More coffee. Rescan list. Create a checklist for TODAY’s tasks (the original list wasn’t time-scoped)

So now I have two checklists (both very neat and orderly) and have had a bit more than my usual caffeine. The house is silent, except for the quiet sloshing of the washing machine.

That’s when I get a call from Getty. (10am) And I’m oddly relieved. This question I know how to answer.

Throughout the day, I check off a number of items from my checklist (hurray!)

  • check. Go to the zoo for a playdate with CJ and one of his friends from school.
  • check. Make a nutritious dinner
  • check. Bake fresh pumpkin muffins for breakfast tomorrow. (baking with CJ = bonding activity. That’s two checks for the price of one!)
  • check. Laundry
  • check. Drop off library books.
  • check. Enjoyable reading/ quiet time.

But when I look back on the day, the primary emotion that comes to mind I can only describe as a slight, nagging bewilderment.

To be honest, I’m not sure how to structure my time without urgent deadlines. I don’t know exactly how to prioritize when tasks are mundane. I don’t know how to plan ahead now that I find myself in such a different place in life.

Bottom line- I think it’s going to take me a while to ease into my new role.

Check. Self reflection complete… now it’s time for some mindless football watching and a decaf latte.
